MENJANGAN
ISLAND
About
the Island
Menjangan Island - the name means "deer" - hangs just
off shore of the mountainous point in far northwestern Bali, 30
minutes by boat from Mimpi Resort Menjangan. Because the island
is in a protected position, currents and wind-generate waves are
rarely a bother, and the reefs here offer fine diving, particularly
for beginning and intermediate divers. Occasionally, the water
can be crystal clear - a snorkeler, distinct, 50 meters above
you - and the rest of the time visibility seldom drops to less
than 25 meters.
The
island is part of the Bali
Barat National Park, a protected reserve area that encompasses
much of Bali's little-populated western end. Although the best
diving in Menjangan is said to be April through November (during
the southeast moonsoon), the island can be dived year -round as
it offers some of the most protected diving in Bali. The clarity
of the water can, at times, be amazing, and the best in Bali -
October through November often has horizontal visibility of 50M+.
A current of more than one knot is unusual.
